Friends of the Cavalier have been able to donate £3,341-81p to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club’s ‘Lub-Dub’ Fund, thanks to everyone who came along on Sunday 18th August with sponsorship and donations.

The weather was perfect and with the castle and moat as the backdrop, Mrs Susan Burgess, President of the Cavalier KCS Club, welcomed everyone and then started the walk.  The sight of hundreds of dogs and owners walking together around the Castle grounds was one to remember.

Mrs Susan Burgess presented prizes of original paintings by Eleanor Mancey, together with Pedigree Chum complete dog food to those who raised the most sponsorship money on the day.

This was followed by the Fun Show, judged by Christine Craik (Scobec, Banbury).  Christine, who is the Honorary Secretary of Banbury & District Canine Association,  had some difficult decisions to make during the afternoon as the classes were very well supported by pedigree and cross breeds. The rosettes and prizes awarded for 1st to 5th places were hotly contested for.  Cavaliers happily took the top 4 awards in the Waggiest Tail class, and the final line-up in the OAP class were all Cavaliers aged from 14 to 9 years.

Rosemary Powell’s ‘Helping Hearts’ stall did brisk business during the day, and Diane Seale was busy micro-chipping dogs at a specially reduced rate.  Rosemary and Diane have both kindly donated all their profits to the ‘Lub-Dub’ Fund.   The Raffle table was overflowing with prizes, all kindly donated.

Ros, Pam, Eleanor and Janet (aka Friends of the Cavalier) would like to thank all those who helped to make this event so successful, but special thanks go to Lord and Lady Saye and Sele for allowing the use of their beautiful home, to Susan Burgess for giving her valuable time and support, Pedigree Chum for their sponsorship of the prizes, all those who generously donated to the raffle, and not forgetting the excellent team of helpers without whom none of this would have been possible.

Friends of the Cavalier raised money for this research project two years ago, and £7000 is already held in the Cavalier Club’s ‘Lub-Dub’ Fund from our past fund raising events.

The £3,341-81p from this event now brings the total raised by the Cavalier KCS Club’s ‘Lub-Dub’ appeal up to the £17,000 required to sponsor an MSc student for 2 years to work on a research project into heart disease in the breed.

The research which the funds raised will support will be undertaken by the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh in collaboration with the University College, Galway, and the project will undertake important research to find why heart cells that are important in maintaining healthy valves fail at that task, and to look to find the triggers which start the disease process with the hope that in time it will be possible to prevent or reverse the disease.

2004 - UPDATE.   The Club's Lub-Dub' Fund raised sufficient funds to sponsor an MSc student for 3 years, thanks to donations received from Friends of the Cavalier, Cavalier Club members, and also from The Kennel Club's Charitable Trust.  The research work has now commenced.

Full details about the research can be found on www.thecavalierclub.co.uk
